International Workshop of Nature Reserve Legislation convened in Beijing

The Committee of Environmental Protection and Resource Conservation of NPC and Beijing South-North Institute for Sustainable Development co-sponsored the international workshop on research and investigation for the legislation on nature reserve on May 31, 2005 in Beijing. Participants include officials from Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Agriculture, State Forestry Administration, Ministry of Construction, State Oceanic Administration, State Environmental Protection Administration, State Tourism Administration, experts from Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Forestry University and Beijing Normal University as well as scholars and experts from World Bank, Asian Development Bank, the US Embassy in China, World Wide Fund for Nature, The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, IUCN, Global Environment Institute, etc.

The workshop is co-hosted by Yang Jike, former deputy director of the Committee of Environmental Protection and Resource Conservation of NPC and now honorary director of Beijing South-North Institute for Sustainable Development, and Sun Youhai, chief of Legislation Office of the Committee of Environmental Protection and Resource Conservation of NPC. Ye Rutang, deputy director of the Committee of Environmental Protection and Resource Conservation of NPC, Chen Qing, executive director of Beijing South-North Institute for Sustainable Development, and experts from the Institute of Zoology of CAS, WWF, etc. made speech to voice their suggestions and advices for the drafting of the law from various standing point and highlight the difficulties and pressure faced by nature reserves in China.

After the speeches, those present also expressed their own ideas about the future law. Sun Youhai made final remarks and said highly of the workshop on behalf of the Committee.

The workshop is co-funded by the US Embassy in China, ACCA21, The Nature Conservancy and World Wide Fund for Nature.
