The 21st Century Forum:Forestry & Environmental Protection,2001" is an ad hoc conference to be held in Beijing on September 4-6,2001. The conference will be jointly organized by the Committee of Population, Resources and Environment and the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the CPPCC National Committee in collaboration with China's State Environmental Protection Administration and State Forestry Administration. The theme of the conference is Forestry & Environmental Protection.Professor Yang Jike made a presentation of Promoting Green Electricity In China at the conference.

The Millennium Calls for Alternative Fuel of Automobile written by Chen Qing, director of SNISD, along with the a paper of Wang Yi, the member of the National Conditions Analysis and Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Zhang Jiqiang, senior program officer of W. Alton Jones Foundation, was published in the Economic Daily.

the 31st anniversary of Earth Day Global Village of Beijing commemorated the 31st anniversary of Earth Day. It issued the first set of environmental conservation CD-the Earth suite, and instructed a series of environmental issues on green consumption and sustainable energy including green electricity. Green electricity is an opportunity for us to consume green energy and thus to pursue the theme of the 31st Earth Day, promoting sustainable energy and retarding the climate from getting warmer.

SNISD held a lecture on green electricity for university students. More than ten students from different universities attended the event with enthusiasm. Meanwhile the lecture obtained much attention from journalists of the newspaper of China Consumer.

Two films, both of which were about sustainable energy, were shown to the public. South-North briefed the audience on its green power project to extend the knowledge of sustainable energydevelopment.

Deputies from SNISD, Global Village of Beijing and Greener Beijing had a discussion on green power with the residents in green community.


Supported by The Energy Foundation, SNISD will carry out public survey on potential green power consumers in Beijing together with two other Non-profit Organizations in China: the Global Village and Greener Beijing

With the promotion of SN, the help of SH AUTO and Tongji University, SMEC has developed a rather specific work plan of FC auto development, in 4 basic phases starting early Feb. (NEW)
1--Global resource investigation andresearch on development strategy;
2--Product planning;
3--Manufacturing sample vehicles;
4--Manufacturing in moderate volume, setting up a brand name for next generation of vehicles;

Promoted by South-North Institute for Sustainable Development (SNISD), Beijing Fuyuan Century Fuel Cell Power Ltd. and Antelope Electric Bicycle Factory, a subsidiary of Suzhou Machinery (Group) Holding Corporation jointly manufactured the first fuel cell powered scooter in China. The two companies decided to establish a joint venture in Shanghai in March of this year to produce 100w - 5 kw fuel cell powered scooters or motorcycles. Antelope Electric Bicycle Factory currently produces 100,000 electric bicycle per year.

Beijing Fuyuan Century Fuel Cell Power Ltd. and China Shipping Corporation were discussing the possibility of cooperation on fuel cell powered yacht in Shanghai last week. The design of the first-generation fuel cell powered yacht has been completed.

The SNISD will organized leaders of relevant government departments and relevant companies to visit their cooperative partnership on fuel cell in California.

Great news from Yunnan: Currently, two four-in-one installations have been completed at Shusong Village, one is for the nature reserve, and the other is for a local farmer, Nanji who borrowed money from local Agricultural Bank. Biogas has been produced and used for cooking both by Nanji and the Nature reserve. Last week, Nanji have got his first vegetable harvest from the four-in-one. He gathered a basket of garlic sprout and sold them out to local residents in one day.

Good news: A new project "Promoting high quality and high yield rice cultivation and integrated utilization of biogas in Wa, Myanmar" has been approved by Toyota Foundation.
